The crew behind the print shop
Thirty years of ink, paper, and getting it right.
I'm Stephi. I spent three decades in corporate graphics — production printing, prepress, color management, the unglamorous craft of making sure a file leaves the screen and lands on the material exactly the way it was meant to. Breakwater is what happens when you take all of that and point it at work you actually care about.
Why a print shop knows things a print button doesn't
Anyone can upload art to a fulfillment service. What they can't do is tell you the line weight is too fine to hold on a die cut, or that the color you picked will shift on a dark garment, or that the vinyl you want won't survive a Connecticut winter on a truck window.
That's the part I bring. Every order here is designed, proofed, tested, and printed by hand — by someone who has spent a career being responsible for how it comes out.
Named for the thing that takes the hit
I spent most of my childhood summers on Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, with my grandfather. The breakwaters up there are enormous — great tumbled rocks stacked against the Atlantic — and sitting out on them while the water came in is still the closest thing I have to a definition of home.
My grandfather was an artist. Most of what I know about making things, and most of the reason I wanted to, I got from him out on those rocks.
So the name wasn't much of a decision. A breakwater is the thing that takes the hit so the harbor stays calm.
And if you know me online, you know me as StephiMakes3D. Breakwater Print Co. is what grew out of that — 3D printed goods, custom apparel, die-cut stickers, banners, and one-off commissions for people who want something made properly.
Everything here gives back
I'm a mom. My daughter has complex needs and autism, and we have been carried — genuinely carried — by organizations that show up for families like ours. So the shop pays that back.
Proceeds from Breakwater support causes close to us, including:
- The Hometown Foundation
- Dream Ride
- Miss Amazing CT
— along with a number of smaller local causes throughout the year. I'm currently in the process of organizing a nonprofit of my own, so this list is going to grow.
Where this is going
I have bigger plans for this shop than selling shirts.
There's a stretch after high school where families get handed a question nobody prepares them for: what's next? College isn't the right fit for every kid, and "nothing" isn't an answer. I live inside that question at my own kitchen table.
I want Breakwater to be a place where people with disabilities learn real creative job skills — design, print production, running the machines, making things with their hands. Work that pays, and travels, and belongs to them.
Yes you can. Yes you matter. Here are some skills to get you there.
About all the pirates
You'll notice a lot of skulls, anchors, and one-eyed characters around here. There's a reason for that.
I'm living with ocular melanoma. People who have it call themselves pirates — because it's all fun and games until someone loses an eye, and we would much rather make that joke ourselves than wait around for someone else to make it badly.
So the flag flies over the shop. It isn't a theme I picked off a moodboard — being a pirate is a badge of honor, a lifestyle none of us chose, and one we're proud to still be sailing.
Made by hand, on the coast, with salt in our veins.
